Aston Villa are balancing Europa League football with their Premier League duties this season
Aston Villa have been in impressive form over recent weeks following their slow start to the season. They won 2-1 away at Tottenham Hotspur last time out in the Premier League. Morgan Rogers and Emi Buendia got their goals against Thomas Frank’s side at the Tottenham Hotspur as they secured an eye-catching three points.
Unai Emery’s men are back in action on Thursday with an away trip to Holland to play Go Ahead Eagles in the Europa League. They then play Manchester City at Villa Park in the league on Sunday. In the meantime, here is a look at how much the Midlands outfit will make from playing in Europe...
How much will Aston Villa make from the Europa League?
Aston Villa missed out on the Champions League on the final day of the last campaign. The were beaten by Manchester United at Old Trafford which meant they didn’t finish in the top five. They have had to make do with the Europa League this term.
Money flows into the UEFA competitions from television deals and commercial rights, with the Champions League driving the value. The Europa League and Europa Conference League still generate significant money though. Cash is distributed to teams through the value pillar method.
The Champions League allocates £735million, whilst the Europa League and Europa Conference League distribute £487m and £246m between their teams respectively. Here is a look at how much English clubs will make this season:
Manchester City (UCL) – £39.4m
Liverpool (UCL) – £36.8m
Chelsea (UCL) – £34.6m
Arsenal (UCL) – £32m
Tottenham Hotspur (UCL) – £28m
Newcastle United (UCL) – £14.2m
Aston Villa (UEL) – £11.5m
Nottingham Forest (UEL) – £9.6m
Crystal Palace (UECL) – £5.4m
Aston Villa will also receive a fixed participation fee of £3.7million. In addition, they will also be rewarded depending on how far they progress through each round. If they were to win the Europa League, they would bank £6.1million.
What next for Aston Villa in the Europa League?
Aston Villa face a Go Ahead Eagles team up next who won the Dutch Cup for the first time earlier this year. They then lock horns with Maccabi Tel Aviv at the start of November in a match that has caused controversy with away fans banned from attending the match. Emery’s men have already seen off Bologna and Feyenoord in the tournament so far.
Villa will be in confident mood after their victory at Spurs. They are looking strong at the moment as they look to keep their momentum going. Emery was delighed with their last win and said afterwards: “I’m very, very proud of every Aston Villa supporter, they are here with us, they support us and they were helping us. And, of course, I’m very proud of the work we did today.
“The players focused on the match, 90 minutes strongly. Even when we were losing, we didn’t lose our gameplan and progressively got better, feeling better. It was really a very good win. As well, confidence is coming, the confidence we’ll need for the next matches.”
