Woody Johnson defends Aaron Glenn, blames Justin Fields for Jets' 0-7 record

During NFL meetings on Tuesday, October 21st, New York Jets' owner Woody Johnson spoke with the media about various issues and topics related to his team. There were a few messages he sent, including one on how he still believes in Aaron Glenn.

After a 0-7 start, it wouldn't be surprising if Glenn weren't in the good graces of Johnson. But, he still has the belief of ownership and the trust of Johnson. But in the process of expressing his belief in Glenn, Johnson blamed Justin Fields.

Other than his snide comment about "if we can just complete a pass," Johnson further blamed Fields in a video shared by Tom Rock of NewsdaySports. And this time, it was a direct shot at Fields.

"If you look at any head coach with a quarterback like that," Johnson said, "You're going to see similar results."

It's a brutal quote from the team's owner. While Johnson didn't name Fields, it's a clear callout of the Jets' $40 million starting quarterback. Glenn has the belief of Johnson, while Fields very clearly does not.

Glenn brought in Fields to be the starter, but Fields has struggled a ton this season, especially in the last two weeks. He had -10 net passing yards against the Denver Broncos, and then 46 46-yard passing performance the next week on 12 attempts.

Those struggles have led to Tyrod Taylor having a chance to start in Week 8 against the Cincinnati Bengals. While nothing is official, Johnson's comments point towards the Jets making the quarterback change this week.

Johnson's quotes about Fields on Tuesday after Week 7 are a clear indication that his patience has run thin with Fields. He still believes in Glenn, and Johnson thinks that any coach would struggle with Fields as their starter.

In his NFL career, between time with the Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers, and now the Jets, Fields has a 14-36 record. One year ago, with the Steelers, he went 4-2, but was replaced mid-season by Russell Wilson.

For the majority of his career, Fields has had a losing record. While it's not always been on Fields, Johnson's comments point towards Fields as the reason why Glenn's Jets have struggled so badly through the first seven weeks of the year.
