Why Falcons released Ray-Ray McCloud after surprise decision in consecutive weeks

Up until a couple of weeks ago, the Atlanta Falcons' clear No. 3 wide receiver was Ray-Ray McCloud.

Now, McCloud doesn't even play for the Falcons anymore.

The Falcons released McCloud on Tuesday afternoon, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

McCloud was inactive each of the past two weeks, despite the Falcons dealing with other WR injuries.

He ends his Falcons career having played in 21 games, catching 68 passes for 750 yards while also serving as a kick returner.

Why did the Falcons release Ray-Ray McCloud?

The Falcons released McCloud after something had clearly gone wrong in the building.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported the cut like this: "The #Falcons released WR Ray-Ray McCloud III, who was sent home from the facility last week and didn't play this weekend."

It wasn't an injury. This is how it was described when McCloud was first ruled out for Week 6:

"In a surprise turn, the Falcons also chose to keep fellow receiver Ray-Ray McCloud inactive against the Buffalo Bills," Tori McElhaney of AtlantaFalcons.com wrote that Monday night. "McCloud is not dealing with an injury, and is considered a healthy scratch for Atlanta."

Apparently, things got worse and not better, leading to his dismissal from the facility last week.

The Falcons have Drake London and Darnell Mooney atop their WR depth chart.

Now, it looks like Casey Washington will slot in as the full time WR3.

There may be more to come out about McCloud, but this doesn't bode well for his NFL future.
