ESPN New York host — and Yankees voice — Michael Kay has a problem with something Giants head coach Brian Daboll did on Sunday.
After the Giants’ heartbreaking 33-32 loss, Daboll removed his headset and slammed it on the sidelines in front of defensive coordinator Shane Bowen. In Kay’s mind, this was Daboll lashing out at his coordinator after squandering a 19-0 lead entering the fourth quarter.
The problem is, Daboll is the head coach. Kay believes, he has the power to change plays if he doesn’t like them.
“I don’t get it. He seems like he has a problem with defensive coordinators,” Kay said, via X/Twitter. “He kind of ran Wink Martindale out of town, right? So now you’re going to blame Shane Bowen. You have the final voice, Brian. You could stop it. You just say into that headset that you’re wearing, ‘No, we’re not doing this. Send four (or) blitz every now and then. We’re not doing this.’
“You can’t get mad at him after the fact. It’s kind of hypocritical, don’t you think? I take that back; it’s not ‘kind of’ hypocritical. It is hypocritical."
Bowen has been receiving a lot of criticism after Sunday’s loss. But it’s hard not to notice Daboll’s history with defensive coordinators, as Kay pointed out.
The truth is, even some Giants players appeared to be unhappy about the playcalling.
Edge rusher Brian Burns, who leads the NFL with 9 sacks, stormed into the tunnel after the game, yelling to no one in particular on his way back to the Giants’ locker room after an all-time crushing loss at the Broncos.
It was hard to make out everything Burns shouted, but “stupid ass s---!” clearly stood out as he vented frustration. Then he started to say “drop eight f---ing!” before trailing off and rubbing his hands across his face.
Moments later, he sat quietly in his locker and sobbed. He looked at the carpeted floor, elbows on his knees, head in his hands.
