Manchester United U21s suffered a 5-2 loss at League One side Barnsley in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday evening.

Barnsley nearly grabbed the lead in the third minute through Adam Phillips, whose shot was saved by goalkeeper Will Murdock.

Four minutes later, Jack Fletcher put Man United ahead after Chido Obi did brilliantly to win possession.

Shea Lacey got the chance to double Man United’s lead, forcing Kieren Flavell in the Barnsley’s goal to a save in the 22nd minute.

Phillips almost restored parity for the hosts before the half hour mark but his attempt struck the post.

Barnsley were awarded a penalty in the 41st minute after Daniel Armer committed a foul. David McGoldrick then stepped up to convert the spot-kick, sending Murdock the wrong way.

Shortly after the break, the former Sheffield United man made it 2-1 in favour of the hosts, after Man United lost possession in the midfield.

United levelled the scores on the hour mark as Lacey won the ball and played perfect pass to Chido Obi, who applied the finish.

Two minutes later, Barnsley regained their lead as McGoldrick slotted the ball beyond Murdock’s reach.

Jack Fletcher was then sent off for a second bookable offence, making United’s push for an equaliser even more difficult.

Neil Farrugia added to Barnsley’s advantage in the 75th minute, running in behind United’s defence to pick out the bottom corner.

Jon Russell added the icing on the cake for the League One side, curling the ball into the bottom corner with a precise shot.

The result leaves United without a victory in the competition, sitting bottom of Group D. They face Notts County in their next fixture on November 4.
