Barnes batters Benfica - Newcastle United triumph at home in Champions League

· 21 October 2025, 22:18

Newcastle United kept up their impressive record against Jose Mourinho sides by beating Benfica 3-0 at St James' Park tonight.

That's two wins in three games for Newcastle in the Champions League, which puts them in the top eight of the league for now, with more games to be played tomorrow.

Newcastle were in control for much of the game, with Benfica being pegged back to just a few shots, which were saved brilliantly by Nick Pope, who had an outstanding game.

Anthony Gordon got Newcastle moving on 31 minutes, tapping home a Jacob Murphy cross as Eddie Howe's changes to the lineup ultimately paid off.

Anthony Gordon was in a league of his own tonight

Gordon was everywhere tonight and barely put a foot wrong, although the same could be said about pretty much every player who took to the pitch for Newcastle. Gordon's goal was his fourth in three Champions League games, and he became the first-ever Newcastle United player to score in three consecutive games in the competition.

Substitute, Harvey Barnes got on the end of a 65-yard Nick Pope throw to run in behind the Benfica defence and stroke the ball home via the far post to make it 2-0.

Nick Woltemade was a bit isolated up top and didn't really get many chances to score, but his link-up play was a huge part of what drove Newcastle forward, and he was involved in Newcastle's third goal, which was scored by Harvey Barnes, who nabbed his brace after latching on to a through ball from Anthony Gordon.

Newcastle will now be feared in the Champions League

Dan Burn almost added a fourth right at the end of the game, lashing a fierce effort goalwards, which was tipped around the post by Anatolly Trubin, who kept it from being a cricket score.

Newcastle have really set out their stall in the Champions League this season, and it looks like they fear no one. Yes, they were beaten in their first game, but that was against Barcelona, and Barca did not have things their own way during that game.

Athletic Bilbao come to St James' Park next in the competition, and they must be absolutely bricking it having seen the Magpies score seven goals in the last two games without reply.
