Chelsea's £80m transfer hope dashed

Chelsea are reportedly set to miss out on a transfer target as his club is eager to offer him a new deal.

The Blues’ rumoured interest was revealed recently, despite the West London club having already signed a plethora of attacking players this summer.

Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Alejandro Garnacho, Estevao Willian, Kendry Paez and Facundo Buonanotte all moved to West London, yet it seems the club were not finished.

Enzo Maresca’s team were linked with Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers; however, it appears the Blues’ interest is likely to fall through.

According to The Mirror, Villa are keen to agree on a new deal with Rogers, securing his long-term future at the club.

The Villa star joined the club in February 2024 for an initial £8m from Middlesbrough, with a potential rise to £12m.

Recent reports suggested that Chelsea might have made an £80m bid for the 23-year-old, who has played 81 times for the Villans and scored 18 goals.

The report states that Villa could now bolster their negotiating position, with the Englishman potentially signing a new contract to complement the one set to expire in 2030.

Extending the deal further undeniably gives the West Midlands club the upper hand in any future negotiations with rival clubs.

Although Chelsea’s reported interest did not lead to a formal offer, the Blues’ links with a move seemed odd, considering the large number of players at their disposal capable of playing in Rogers’ position.

Despite his injury, Cole Palmer remains the club’s main No. 10, and it would be unwise to sign another player for £80m for the same role.

While Chelsea’s new owners are known for making surprising transfer deals, even this one would have been unusual for Clearlake Capital.

The potential arrival of Rogers could also have blocked Paez's pathway, whereas Estevao's ability on the right and in midfield has been a highlight of his young career.
