NEW YORK — The NFL may give renewed consideration this offseason to implementing a fourth-and-15 or a fourth-and-20 alternative to the onside kick.
The league’s modest tweak to its onside kick rules this season has failed to produce the intended improvement to the success rate of kicking teams. Troy Vincent, the NFL’s executive vice president of football operations, told team owners as they began their two-day quarterly meeting Tuesday at a Manhattan hotel that a rule change to allow a team to retain possession of the ball with an offensive play might be a better option.
