Manager says Man Utd loanee has suffered injury after breakout performance,'Scan came back...'

Manchester United’s loans this season have been much better planned out than in previous years, with numerous youngsters getting the opportunity to shine.

The loan market has been a weakness for years at Manchester United, with promising young players often heading on loans where they don’t play.

However, new United loan manager Jonny Evans has done a very encouraging job, with multiple loanees really impressing at their loan clubs.

This past weekend, Ethan Wheatley shone for Northampton, making the team of the week after his goal in an impressive display. Additionally, Radek Vitek has been continuously excellent for Bristol City.

However, Saturday also saw another loanee stand out for his team.

Toby Collyer ruled out for West Brom through injury

One loanee in the Championship is Toby Collyer, and he enjoyed a very impressive outing last weekend for West Brom.

For the Baggies, Collyer enjoyed his best performance yet in the win against Preston. But despite the top performance, there is bad news, with Collyer now injured.

Speaking with the Express and Star, Brom boss Ryan Mason has explained the situation around Collyer’s injury.

“Hopefully, it’s not too bad. He had a few injuries at Man Utd last season in a similar area.

“He’s a young boy, he’s still growing, he’s still developing, and we need to be aware of that. So, yes, the scan came back, it’s something that’s going to keep him out, but hopefully not for too long.”

This is nightmare timing for Collyer, suffering a setback just as he was beginning to look at home in the Championship; however, it is encouraging to hear that he won’t be out for a long time.

Manchester United could be planning to cash in on Toby Collyer

While Collyer was once considered the best youngster in the country, his chances of ever making it at United now look rather slim, with the midfield department set to be overhauled in 2026, along with the young talents being recruited.

With this, it feels likely that come summer 2026, Collyer will be surplus to requirements. However, by the time the transfer window rolls around, Ineos will hope that he’s established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Championship.

Collyer has the ability to do this, and if he does, there could be a £10m at least sale on the cards for United, based on recent years and how much Championship loanees from big clubs have cost in recent years.

This would fulfil Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s academy admission when he accepted that the financials can be helped by selling homegrown players.

Collyer could go on to have a brilliant season at West Brom, so hopefully he won’t be out too long.
