Swatragh’s Jude McAtamney has been cut by the New York Giants after missing two vital kicks in their dramatic loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday.
The Giants led 19–0 heading into the fourth quarter, only for the Broncos to run out 33-32 winner.
McAtamney's two missed extra points in the contest were the difference between winning and losing. In the cut throat world of NFL, the New York Giants punished the County Derry native by releasing him with immediate effect.
McAtamney's first miss came in the second quarter after Cam Skattebo scored a touchdown to make the score 13–0. The second missed point came in the fourth quarter after Jaxson Dart’s touchdown put the Giants 32–30 up with 37 seconds remaining in the game.
After the second McAtamney miss, Bo Nix led the Broncos down the park to set up a field goal, which won Denver the game.
“I missed vital points at vital times today,” McAtamney said in a post-match interview. “I’m not going to shy away from that.
“I’ve got to make the kicks. I'll take full responsibility.”

Former Giants Super Bowl winning kicker from 2012, Lawrence Tynes, bluntly stated on social media: “Hate being critical of kickers, and I love the International program, but McAtamney is not an NFL kicker.”
However, the Giants may still offer the former Derry U20 GAA star a lifeline. As he is an international player, the New York side can add McAtamney to the practice squad without using up a roster spot.
The 25-year-old swapped Gaelic football for gridiron in 2020. The former Ulster U20 champion was picked up by the New York Giants in 2024 after a successful college career.
