How James Maddison and Archie Gray reacted as Tottenham miss out on Leeds star

Leeds United fans had become increasingly worried about Harry Gray’s future at Elland Road with a new contract yet to be announced, but that all changed on Tuesday evening.

Leeds announced a new deal for Gray, his first professional terms with the club. Leeds did not disclose the length of the deal but did state it was a long-term deal for the 17-year-old Thorp Arch academy product.

Gray has been on fire for the 21’s this season, having a hand in nine goals before a hip injury has stunted his progress. It comes after he became the fifth member of the Gray family to play for Leeds last season.

It sees Leeds tie down the future of one of their best prospects, but it also ends interest from the likes of Tottenham and Man City, with the Yorkshire Evening Post confirming their interest in the past 24 hours.

Indeed, both Spurs and Man City have raided Leeds’ academy in the last two years and Leeds will have been keen to avoid another example of that this time around. Especially, having lost Archie Gray, as well.

Leeds posted the announcement of Gray’s new deal on Instagram on Tuesday evening, underlining the club’s delight to have wrapped up the future of the England youth international in the face of interest.

Despite Spurs missing out on Archie’s younger brother, both Archie and James Maddison liked Leeds’ post among plenty of other Leeds players and even newly-appointed Leeds ambassador Lucas Radebe.

Tottenham and City have raided Leeds in the past two years

Towards the end of 2023, Leeds agreed a fee that could go north of £5m with Man City for Finlay Gorman. It is a British transfer record for a player of that age, given that Gorman was just 15 at the time of the deal.

Leeds and City have done plenty of business in the last few years, with Kalvin Phillips going to The Etihad and both Jack Harrison and Darko Gyabi arriving at Leeds. Jayden Lienou joined the 21’s this summer.

The same goes for Spurs, who signed Oliver Boast from Leeds in the summer. With both City and Spurs interested in Gray, Leeds will be delighted to have got a deal over the line for the wonderkid attacker.
