The latest Newcastle injury news ahead of their Premier League game against Fulham.
Newcastle United will hope to build on their impressive Champions League win over Benfica when they welcome Fulham to St. James’ Park on Saturday – but Eddie Howe is expected to go into the game with several key players carrying injuries.
Sandro Tonali was a doubt ahead of the 3-0 over José Mourinho’s side on Tuesday evening and ended up stuck on the bench, while Lewis Hall and summer signing Yoane Wissa are among the players battling their way back from fitness issues.
We’ve got all the latest Newcastle injury news and updates below ahead of the Fulham fixture, along with the struggling players’ expected return dates when available.
Will Sandro Tonali be fit to face Fulham?
Midfielder Tonali has been in the wars lately. Not only did he pick up a knock against Nottingham Forest prior to the international break but he also sustained a minor injury while playing for Italy during their game against Israel - and now, he’s struggling with an illness.
Eddie Howe told the media ahead of the win over Benifca that Tonali had a “bit of an illness” and would be “touch and go” for Tuesday’s match after missing training on Monday. In the end, Tonali was on the bench but finished the game as an unused substitute as Howe took the opportunity to provide the Italian with some much-needed rest.
Tonali is expected to be back to full health come Saturday, although Howe did not provide an update on his symptoms after the match. Happily for Newcastle, both Jacob Ramsey and Lewis Miley are back to fitness after recent issues, so there are plenty of options available should Tonali need a little more time to recuperate.
When are Yoane Wissa and Lewis Hall back for Newcastle?
There was good news on full-back Hall, who has struggled with injuries since the turn of the year – Howe confirmed that scans on a hamstring injury revealed the issue to be less severe than initially expected, and the youngster could be back in action soon.
“We think he will be back during this period of games before the next Int' break,” Howe said. “We don't know exactly when that will be but we expect him to [be back soon], if he doesn't suffer any ill effects from anything he is doing.”
An early November comeback seems plausible, then, although there appears to be no chance that he plays against Fulham or Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup fourth round. Big-money buy Wissa is in a similar boat – he’s expected to return to full training imminently and could be available to face West Ham United on 2 November, according to The Athletic’s Chris Waugh.
Full-back Tino Livramento will be out for longer, however, thanks to a knee injury. Howe has said that his recovery is going “well” but he is still not expected back until after the November international break. Frustratingly, fellow right-back Harrison Ashby is also unavailable with Howe confirming last week that he has been struggling with a thigh injury. No timeline for his return has been provided by the club.
