Simon Jordan questions Sean Dyche appointment and makes 'special measures' Everton point

Former Everton manager Sean Dyche has been appointed by Nottingham Forest but Simon Jordan is seemingly not a fan

New Nottingham Forest manager Sean Dyche’s spell at Everton has been referenced in a claims that he only takes charge of sides “on a needs-must basis”. Dyche, whose first press conference as boss of the East Midlands outfit takes place today ahead of Thursday night’s Europa League home game against Porto, has become Forest’s third manager of the season.

Nuno Espirito Santo, who steered the City Ground outfit to their highest finish in 30 years last season and European qualification, was sacked after three games on September 9 while Ange Postecoglou, who guided Tottenham Hotspur to victory in the Europa League last season, their first trophy in 17 years, was axed 19 minutes after the full-time whistle blew on their 3-0 home defeat to Chelsea on Saturday, ensuring he finished with six defeats and no wins from his eight games in charge.

Although the appointment of Dyche, who lives in the Nottingham area, on a contract that runs until the summer of 2027, sees him return to the club where he started his career as an apprentice, and joined by long-serving backroom staff Ian Woan and Steve Stone, who made over 400 Forest appearances between them, former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan is not a fan of the 54-year-old.

Jordan told talkSPORT: “Sean Dyche’s modus operandi, as much as Sean might want to protest this, and does protest it, is that he manages on a needs-must basis.

“He managed Everton on a needs-must, they had no money. They were in special measures, the club was being policed by the Premier League in terms of what they could and couldn’t buy.

“So, they were maintaining the status quo of staying in the division.

“His de facto position, despite one outstanding season of getting Burnley into Europe, was keeping Burnley in the division.

“So, we’ve morphed into a position of Nottingham Forest is primarily, through default position, is to stay in the position.”

Everton were second bottom of the Premier League when they replaced Frank Lampard with Dyche in January 2023.

Despite finishing the season with the lowest equivalent points total in their history, the Blues avoided what would have been a first relegation in 72 years by a single goal on the final day of the season as Abdoulaye Doucoure’s strike gave them a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth at Goodison Park.

In 2023/24, Dyche kept Everton up again, despite two separate points deductions for PSR rule breaches which ultimately totalled eight points, although they went on a 13-match winless run in the Premier League that stretched beyond Christmas to Easter.

In Goodison Park’s historic final season in 2023/24, Dyche won just two Premier League home games and was sacked at the halfway point of the campaign with the Blues one point above the drop zone having taken 17 points from 19 matches.
