Chelsea bidding to extend 11, 12-game streaks, set unwanted first for Ajax in 36 years

Chelsea square off against Ajax in the Champions League on Wednesday night looking to extend two notable streaks and end an unwanted one for the visitors.

The Blues started the League Phase campaign with a 3-1 reverse in Bayern Munich, but they were able to respond with a 1-0 triumph over Benfica before the October international break.

That acted as the catalyst for a three-game winning streak that has also included victories over Liverpool and Nottingham Forest ahead of welcoming Ajax to Stamford Bridge.

With squad rotation likely to occur to a certain extent, Chelsea are perhaps not as strong favourites as is being perceived, yet they will be anticipating a productive night in West London.

Ahead of playing the Eredivisie giants, Enzo Maresca's side have the opportunity to extend two runs, one specifically at their home ground.

Chelsea bidding to extend Stamford Bridge streak

While Chelsea have lost two of their last 12 Champions League fixtures at Stamford Bridge, they each came versus Real Madrid in knockout ties.

In group-stage contests, a 12-match unbeaten run has been put together in home matches, Chelsea not losing since succumbing 1-0 to Valencia in September 2019.

Meanwhile, 11 games have passed by since Ajax have recorded a win over Premier League opposition, losing on nine of those occasions.

Ajax have not defeated an English team since a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final in 2019.

The visitors to Stamford Bridge are in abysmal form in major European fixtures, suffering defeat in their last three Europa League games and two Champions League encounters.

They have not suffered six such losses since between April 1988 and September 1989. Meanwhile, Chelsea have never lost in six games against opponents facing the same predicament.

How does Ajax's domestic form look?

Although there had been expectation that Ajax would put together a stronger Eredivisie title challenge in 2025-26, they are already nine points off the pace.

Johnny Heitinga's side have collected 16 points from nine matches, but just four victories have been posted during that period.

Their first league defeat of the campaign came on Saturday as they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat at AZ Alkmaar.

In all competitions, their only success in six matches is a 2-1 triumph over 10-man NAC Breda on September 27.
