Man City are set to receive a chunk of money which Barcelona owe them from a previous transfer.
Pep Guardiola will be delighted with how his side are performing so far this season, they are up to second in the Premier League, ahead of Liverpool. Manchester City won 2-0 against Everton over the weekend and will be looking towards the January transfer window to further boost their squad.
City spent over £150m in the summer transfer window, and will be looking to invest big in January too, so any money coming in will very much help fund their transfer business.
Guardiola has been linked to signing a midfielder to ease some pressure on Rodri, and the Cityzens are also expected to strengthen in defence to add depth too. If they do add in January, they could use some funds which are expected to come their way before the end of the season.
Barcelona owe Man City and Leeds United transfer debt
Barcelona are in a position of financial concern at the moment, and it seems as though their position is getting worse. They aren’t able to work on the Nou Camp, and are also limited in what they can do in the transfer window, having to rely more on loan moves as they did with Marcus Rashford.
However, their financial worries isn’t just limiting what they can currently do, they still owe money from previous transfers. According to a report by talkSPORT, Barcelona owe £138m in debt from former transfer deals that they are yet to settle, including to Man City and Leeds United.
Their biggest debt is to Leeds, as they still owe £36.5m for the transfer of Raphinha, which took place in 2022. In the same summer transfer window, Barcelona signed Ferran Torres from Manchester City for a fee of £48m, and they still owe City £12m for the deal, which they haven’t paid yet.
Other debts include £8.5m to Bayern Munich for Robert Lewandowski, £15.5m to RB Leipzig for Danny Olmo, and also £22m to Sevilla for Jules Kounde. Their debts add up to £138m, and upon releasing current financial reports, the Spanish club have been told to settle up their debts.
If they do this before January, it could hand Man City some extra transfer budget heading into the next transfer window, which is a huge boost.
Who have Man City been linked to signing ahead of January?
The Cityzens did manage to get a lot of their transfer business done in the summer window, adding the likes of Gianluigi Donnarumma, Tijani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki to help boost Guardiola’s squad.
Reports have said that City are plotting a £75m bid for the Forest star, but there has also been reported interest from Man United and Chelsea as the England international has developed into one of the best holding midfielders in the Premier League.
