Chelsea expected to miss out on marquee target after latest contract update

Chelsea’s transfer plans look set to take another hit, with Morgan Rogers now expected to sign a new long-term contract at Aston Villa. The 23-year-old has been on the Blues’ radar for some time, but Villa are moving swiftly to protect one of their key assets.

According to The Mirror, Unai Emery’s side are working behind the scenes to reward Rogers with fresh terms that would secure his future at Villa Park. This new deal is expected to extend beyond his current contract, which already runs until 2030 giving Aston Villa maximum leverage in any future negotiations.

Chelsea were reportedly prepared to go big for the England international, with speculation of an £80 million move surfacing last month. However, Aston Villa have made it abundantly clear: Rogers is not for sale.

Since arriving from Middlesbrough in early 2024 for a fee rising to £15 million, Rogers has flourished under Emery. His versatility, direct running and eye for goal have made him one of the most dangerous wide players in the league and a player Chelsea believed could add spark to their inconsistent forward line.

The problem for Chelsea? Aston Villa see Morgan Rogers as central to their project. With European ambitions growing stronger each season, the club is determined to keep its best talents and this proposed extension is as much a statement of intent as it is a reward for form.

The new deal would all but end Chelsea’s pursuit, forcing the Blues to turn their attention elsewhere as they continue to reshape their attack.
