Camera footage that tracks a Burnley player’s actions during Saturday’s match against Leeds United has emerged online, amid a police investigation into an allegation of spitting.
The authorities have not yet formally confirmed the identity of the player in question, though it has been widely reported the Football Association and Lancashire Police are both looking into claims Burnley midfielder Hannibal Mejbri spat at Leeds United supporters during Saturday’s game. Leeds United are aware of the allegation of spitting while Lancashire Police is working to “establish the facts”.
A video that has emerged on TikTok appears to show a Burnley substitute drop something by the goal in front of the away end while warming up during the match. The player then turns towards the visiting support.
It is not conclusive what happens thereafter, but away supporters can be seen up in arms and gesturing towards the player. Some fans can be seen complaining to stewards in front of them.
Eye witness accounts have claimed that, at some point in the second half, a Burnley player spat towards the away end, and that Leeds supporters had tried to let stewards know of the incident.
While no official confirmation has been given, it is thought the Football Association is looking into the matter. Police meanwhile continue to work with Burnley FC.
A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: “Lancashire Police are aware of an alleged incident involving a Burnley player during the second half of the Premier League game between Burnley and Leeds United at Turf Moor on Saturday 18th October. We are currently working with Burnley Football Club to establish the facts.”
Intentional spitting at another person, in most cases, is classed as common assault under UK law. Players who are established to be doing this during a game are required to be shown a red card, as per the game’s laws.
Borja Sainz was banned for six Norwich City matches in January after being found to have intentionally spat at an opposition player. Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis was banned from attending five matches after spitting on the ground as officials walked past last year.
