Anthony Gordon makes Newcastle history in latest Champions League outing

It was a special night for Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon on Tuesday (October 21) as he wrote himself into the club's history books.

The winger's goal to break the deadlock in his side's 3-0 victory over Benfica at St James' Park meant he became the first Newcastle player to find the net in three successive Champions League matches.

The goal 32 minutes into the game against the Portuguese side came after Jacob Murphy delivered a brilliant low cross from the right-hand side and Gordon was able to tap the ball into the net from close range.

The Englishman previously scored a brace in his team's 4-0 win away against Union Saint-Gilloise on Matchday 2, converting twice from the penalty spot.

He also grabbed a consolation goal in a 2-1 loss to Spanish giants Barcelona in the opening game of this year's Champions League competition.

Gordon turned provider in the second-half against Jose Mourinho's side as he set up the second of substitute Harvey Barnes' brace.

Gordon touched on what it felt like to make European history for his club following the full-time whistle against Benfica.

"It means everything, but I need to get more. My ambition doesn't stop there. It's well known I'm a very ambitious person," the Player of the Match told TNT Sports.

"So I'm very proud of that, but I've got to get more (goals)," the England international added.

Gordon was also delighted with his goal because of how it allowed his team to settle in the game against the Portuguese team.

"I think because we were having so many chances, we had to put one away to calm the nerves. So I was glad to see it go in," he explained.

The 24-year-old then made sure to credit Murphy for his role in the opening goal for Eddie Howe's side.

"I know playing with Murphy, he's going to play that ball all the time, so that goal is all about him."

While Gordon has hit the ground running in front of goal in the Champions League, he is yet to find the yet in the Premier League for Newcastle.

He will be hoping that changes when the Magpies take on Fulham on Saturday afternoon (October 25) at St James' Park.
