Nottingham Forest: Six winners and losers as squad begin life under Sean Dyche

Sean Dyche was confirmed as the new manager of Nottingham Forest - their third this season - and the Tricky Trees only played 11 matches.

The 54-year-old was a graduate of the club’s academy back in the day, which will at least ensure some goodwill as he attempts to repair the damage caused by the shock exits of Nuno Espirito Santo and Ange Postecoglou.

It has been a whirlwind two-and-a-half months on the banks of the Trent as a flurry of late signings sparked a collapse in confidence on the pitch. They have won just once this season, a 3-1 victory on the opening day against Brentford.

And there are likely to be winners and losers as the new man takes the helm - here we take a look at a few.

WINNERS: Morgan Gibbs-White

Morgan Gibbs-White

Morgan Gibbs-White was the subject of an enquiry from Tottenham Hotspur during the summer and it looked for all the world like the England international was heading to north London.

But it didn’t happen. Instead, he stayed put and signed an improved deal which was certainly a ‘win’ as far as the supporters were concerned as the ex-Wolverhampton Wanderers trainee had come of age at the City Ground, working under Nuno.

However, he has had a sluggish start to the campaign - although he is not on his own. But with Dyche living locally to the City Ground and with lieutenants Steve Stone and Ian Woan also having their ears to the ground, it’s highly likely that the club captain will be restored to his favourite position, playing just behind a striker.

Chris Wood

Chris Wood looks on

Dyche will need no introduction to the evergreen Chris Wood - the pair worked in tandem at Burnley.

The New Zealand international enjoyed the form of his life under Nuno, bagging 20 goals as they became last season’s success story.

Wood can be a vital ally for the new manager in the dressing room. The 33-year-old will be able to tell his colleagues about the way in which the new manager works and it is likely that the striker will, in the first instance, be used by the incoming boss.

Omari Hutchinson

Omari Hutchinson, a £37.5m signing from Ipswich Town, must be wondering what’s going on after arriving during the summer.

He was omitted from the squad to play in the Europa League under Nuno - for a reason that hasn’t been revealed.

The England under-21 international was not in favour either under Postecoglou and was left out of the squad altogether to face Chelsea in what turned out to be the Aussie’s last game in charge.

Hutchinson’s progress is stalling at present. He will be anxious to kick-start his career and looking to shine under a new boss.

Callum Hudson-Odoi

Ex-Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi was another whose star was definitely on the rise under Nuno. The way in which Nottingham Forest played suited the speedster down to the ground.

With Anthony Elanga on the other flank, the duo proved to be a perfect foil for Wood, who benefited from the improved service. However, that structure has become confused and all but fallen apart.

Nuno’s early defection, Postecoglou’s arrival, and the import of a raft of new signings have muddied the waters. Nottingham Forest need some clarity. Dyche will provide it, and Hudson-Odoi is highly likely to be one of the beneficiaries.

LOSERS: Igor Jesus

Igor Jesus

Igor Jesus signed from Botafogo for £10m back in August, but he has only played 11 minutes this season when Nottingham Forest were actually ahead in a game.

That was back on the opening day against Brentford and the 24-year-old forward, who was acquired in order to add extra competition up front, was primed to give Wood a run for his money up top in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

As it is, Dyche heads into the City Ground and Wood is the obvious choice to receive his attention. Jesus now has the added complication of Taiwo Awoniyi returning to full fitness following a horrific injury suffered when he collided with a goalpost last season.

Awoniyi was favoured over Jesus by Postecoglou in what turned out to be his last game in charge of the club. However, goals will change any manager’s opinion. The question is: when will he get on the pitch?

Morato

Brazilian defender Morato has found it difficult to break into the first-team since arriving last season. The 24-year-old was kept out of the side due to the sparkling form of Nikola Milenkovic and Murillo. When he played, he looked like he could form a part of Nottingham Forest’s future, moving forward.

But Dyche is famed for his defensive solidity. Heading into Christmas last year, Everton had the best record across Europe’s top leagues for shut-outs since the beginning of October.

The new head coach has spent almost his entire career playing with a flat back four, so the chances of Morato impressing appear limited.

Ryan Yates

Arguably the most pleasant club captain in the Premier League, Ryan Yates is a firm fans’ favourite. However, he’s got his work cut out to make a position his own in Nottingham Forest’s engine room from now on.

Elliot Anderson has taken his chance to press his claims to be aboard England's plane bound for next year’s World Cup with both hands. Ibrahima Sangare was a big-money purchase and the Ivorian is making up for lost time after a slow start on Trentside, while Douglas Luiz looked the real deal when anchoring Aston Villa’s midfield before a £50m move to Juventus backfired.

That leaves Yates with a difficult job if he is to push himself forward to occupy one of the two midfield roles. However, he has the overwhelming support of the Nottingham Forest faithful and is as honest as the day is long.

It is a value judgement as to how the new boss ranks the resources at his disposal, but Yates is likely to find himself featuring during Europa League games.
