NFL: Report card grades in the AFC East for week 7

After winning their fourth-straight game, the New England Patriots (5-2) now sit alone atop the AFC East. The Buffalo Bills (4-2) had a nice week of rest on their bye, while the Miami Dolphins (1-6) and New York Jets (0-7) both lost to widen the gap of haves and have-nots in the division. Let’s take a look at the Week 7 AFC East Report Cards to see how each team graded out this week.

New England Patriots Week 7 Overall Grade: A

It seems impossible that it didn’t happen in the Brady/Belichick Era, but the Patriots just won three-straight road games for the first time in 30+ years with their latest win over the Titans. The Patriots have now already won more games than they did in 2023 or 2024.

New England Patriots Week 7 Offensive Grade: A

Drake Maye continued forcing his way into the MVP conversation with 21-of-23 for 222 passing yards and two touchdowns, while adding 62 rushing yards. The Patriots finally got back on track on the ground with Rhamondre Stevenson adding 88 rushing yards and a touchdown.

New England Patriots Week 7 Defensive Grade: A-

The Patriots defense had a strong second half in shutting out the Titans, but I’ll drop them a bit as they made Cam Ward look like Joe Montana for 1.5 quarters. On the day, however, the Patriots defense had a solid day as they racked up four sacks and an interception while allowing the Titans just 39 rushing yards.

Buffalo Bills Week 7 Bye Week Grade: B+

After coming out to a red-hot 4-0 start, the Bills cooled off with two straight losses before their Week 7 bye. James Cook looked like one of the best backs in the league during Buffalo’s four-game winning streak, but they’ll need him to be more consistent if a deep playoff run is in their future.

Miami Dolphins

Miami Dolphins Week 7 Overall Grade: D-

It’s hard to get played much worse than the Dolphins did in their 31-6 loss to the Browns. They had just 216 yards of total offense on the day and turned the ball over four times (one of which turned into a defensive touchdown). The Dolphins are now 1-6 as they head to Atlanta to take on the Falcons in Week 8.

Miami Dolphins Week 7 Offensive Grade: D-

The Dolphins offense was abysmal on Sunday as they put up just 120 passing yards on the day. Tua Tagovailoa threw three interceptions for the second straight week before being replaced by Quinn Ewers. De’Von Achane was the only bright spot with 82 rushing yards.

Miami Dolphins Week 7 Defensive Grade: C

While it’s easy to blame the Dolphins defense when you look at the 31-6 score, one of those touchdowns came on a defensive score, and the others were partially aided by turnovers. With just 206 yards of total offense allowed on the day, we’ll at least go easy on the defense.

New York Jets

New York Jets Week 7 Overall Grade: D

That’s seven straight losses for the Jets as they fall to 0-7. Things are getting even worse as Justin Fields’ starting job is in jeopardy after a mid-game benching during the 13-6 loss to the Panthers. The Jets will look for their first win of the season against the Bengals in Cincinnati this weekend.

New York Jets Week 7 Offensive Grade: D-

It’s better than the 84 total yards they put up in Week 6, but 220 total yards isn’t very impressive in the grand scheme of things. With just 38 rushing yards (Breece Hall) and just 60 receiving yards (Tyler Johnson) leading the team in their respective categories, it goes without saying that the Jets didn’t get much from their offense.

New York Jets Week 7 Defensive Grade: C

The Jets defense had been consistently allowing 27-plus points for the first five weeks of the season, but they’ve now limited their opponents to 13 points for the second straight week. While it wasn’t enough to secure the win, the Jets defense played much better than it had to begin the season.
