Major injury boost for Real Madrid as defender's return for Juve clash is confirmed

Real Madrid have welcomed Ferland Mendy back into their squad for Wednesday's Champions League game against Juventus.

Mendy has not featured for Los Blancos since last season's Copa del Rey final due to a serious thigh injury, with the France international forced to undergo surgery to repair the issue.

The left-back returned to team training last week, though, and he has now been included in the squad for the European fixture with Italian giants Juventus.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dani Carvajal are also both back in training following injury problems, but neither have been included in the squad for the clash with the Old Lady.

That said, Carvajal could not be included regardless of his fitness situation, with the Spain international serving the second and final match of a Champions League suspension.

Both Alexander-Arnold and Carvajal are expected to be back in the squad for El Clasico, with Real Madrid set to receive a major fitness boost for the game with Barcelona.

Dean Huijsen and Dani Ceballos are also not involved in the matchday squad for the Juventus game, but the pair are expected to return for the game with Hansi Flick's side.

Antonio Rudiger is a long-term absentee due to a muscular problem, while David Alaba is set to be out for at least the next week with a calf issue that he sustained against Getafe last time out.

Raul Asencio featured alongside Eder Militao in the second half of the clash with Getafe, and he could now be brought into the XI for the Champions League clash with Juventus.

Head coach Xabi Alonso also has the option of moving Asencio to right-back and dropping Aurelien Tchouameni into the middle of the back four, but Federico Valverde at right-back is the most likely scenario.

What does the future hold for Ferland Mendy?

Mendy has made 201 appearances for Real Madrid since his arrival from Lyon in 2019, and he has played a vital role in the club's recent success, but his long-term future at Bernabeu is unclear.

Alvaro Carreras has cemented his spot as Real Madrid's first-choice left-back, so there is not an obvious route for him back into the XI at this moment in time, while Fran Garcia is also an option in that area.

Alonso will be unable to keep Carreras, Garcia, Mendy all happy, even with the amount of matches that are coming, and there is believed to be a chance that the latter could be on his way out of the club in 2026.
