Enzo Maresca discussed defensive discipline from **Chelsea**and avoiding more red cards.
The Blues have been through a torrid run with dismissals in the last month. Robert Sanchez received a red card in a 2-1 loss to Man United, and Trevoh Chalobah was sent off in a 3-1 defeat against **Brighton**the week after. In their next game, Joao Pedro left the team down to ten men in a 1-0 win over Benfica, and **Malo Gusto**got his marching orders unnecessarily away at Nottingham Forest.
It is clearly a problem that the head coach has to address as he takes each incident case by case.
“For sure when you concede five six red cards I don't know exactly how many for sure there is something that you have to improve and it's something that for sure we are going to improve.
“I'm not that kind of manager to punish players. I don't think in my view that it is the right way to do things. I prefer to help them to understand and then from there to do the right things. I think the Joao Pedro red card against Benfica was last minutes of the game. Malo Gusto was last minutes of the game. So it depends. They are all different kinds of red card.
“When I become a coach no because I have four kids and when they do something wrong I don't punish them I try to teach them to do the right things and I try to treat the players in the same way.
“I try to help them to understand and not to punish them. So this is the way I see the things.
“Malo red card we can avoid. Joao red card we can avoid that. You can avoid. If you see the Trevoh red card against Brighton you can allow him to shoot and then we see Man United is the same.
“It's a decision that you have to take in one second in two seconds. So it's not easy for the players. Then there are things like the last one. I think that was a was a huge mistake because the game is finished at 0-3.”
