Newcastle United sporting director Ross Wilson has made tying Tino Livramento and Sven Botman down to fresh terms his first task after being handed a key role at St James' Park, GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed on the latest episode of our Market Madness podcast.
The Magpies bounced back from suffering a late defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend by overcoming Portuguese heavyweights Benfica on Tuesday, with Eddie Howe's side sealing a 3-0 Champions League victory courtesy of Anthony Gordon's first half effort and a brace from Harvey Barnes.
Although GMS sources understand that Newcastle convinced Sandro Tonali to sign a secret contract extension during his betting ban, last season's Carabao Cup winners have now turned their attention towards holding internal discussions with key men Livramento and Botman as they seek to keep the spine of their team on Tyneside for the long-term.
Magpies Planning to Reward Livramento and Botman
Tino Livramento in action for Newcastle United
Wilson has prioritised handing Livramento and Botman new contracts at Newcastle, according to GMS sources, and there is more urgency to hold successful negotiations with the latter as he is on course to enter the final 18 months of his current agreement in January.
The central defender has been on the Magpies' books since sealing a £35million switch from Lille in July 2022, when he was also wanted by Italian giants AC Milan, and there is determination to reward him with a long-term deal after he has battled back from a lengthy spell on the treatment table to become a key part of Howe's plans for the remainder of the season.
GMS sources have been informed that Botman is enjoying playing alongside summer recruit Malick Thiaw and, having made a positive start to the campaign, is desperate to have an injury-free run in the side instead of deliberating whether to embark on a fresh challenge if an admirer comes calling for his signature.
Sven Botman's statistics for Newcastle United this season
Livramento, who completed an initial £32million move to Tyneside from Southampton in August 2023, is also in line to be handed the opportunity to be rewarded with an improved contract even though he has not featured since being stretchered off with a knee problem during the Magpies' defeat to Arsenal last month.
Talks have already started with the 22-year-old England international, whose current terms are due to expire in 2028, and GMS sources have learned that there is optimism that he will put pen-to-paper as he is not agitating to leave despite Manchester City remaining keen to sign him after showing serious interest in the summer.
Board Members Not Fearing Repeat of Isak Situation
Liverpool's Alexander Isak
GMS sources have been told that influential figures at Newcastle are calm about Livramento and Botman's respective situations, while there are no fears that current members of the squad will follow in Alexander Isak's footsteps by forcing their way out of St James' Park when on a lucrative contract.
The Magpies have a close-knit dressing room and board members feel Anthony Gordon's willingness to stay on board when Liverpool were circling is an example of how key men can be rewarded or reintegrated into future plans even when heads have been turned by interest.
Newcastle have prioritised refusing to allow players to run down their contract, GMS sources understand, leading to Livramento and Botman being earmarked as fan favourites who need to have fresh terms put in front of them as preparations are made for the winter transfer window.
