According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, it has come to light that David Alaba is determined to earn a new contract at Real Madrid, even as questions remain over his long-term future at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The reporter mentions that the 33-year-old veteran remains a respected leader in the squad and continues to command respect from teammates, but reports suggest that extending his deal beyond 2026 appears unlikely, which could see him leave as a free agent.
Despite his age and recent fitness concerns, Alaba is not thinking about retirement. In fact, sources indicate that he still feels capable of performing at the highest level.
Currently, he is the fifth-choice centre-back under Xabi Alonso, with Dean Huijsen, Eder Militao, Antonio Rudiger, and Raul Asencio ahead of him in the pecking order.
Interestingly, injuries to Huijsen and Rudiger, however, have provided Alaba with opportunities to showcase his experience and influence on the pitch.
Even after that, though, he does not seem to have a place in the starting XI.

Alaba’s commitment was clearly evident at the international level, having started every match for Austria during the September and October international breaks, logging heavy minutes and proving he remains match-fit.
These performances reinforce Alaba’s belief that he can continue contributing at top level.
At the same time, Real Madrid are reportedly looking to strengthen their defence, with players like Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate under consideration.
Should these signings materialise, Alaba’s role in the squad beyond this season could be further limited, adding complexity to any potential contract renewal discussions.
For now, Alaba is focused on making the most of his opportunities, staying ready to step in whenever needed, and demonstrating that he can still play a key role for Real Madrid this season, despite the uncertainty surrounding his long-term plans.
