The Indianapolis Colts continue to hum right along after notching their sixth win of the 2025 campaign in Week 7 and general manager Chris Ballard is likely to have his eye on adding to the upstart team ahead of the Nov. 4 NFL trade deadline.
One thing we know the Colts don't need to improve is their offense, which ranks second, fifth, seventh and first in per-game averages for total yards, passing yards, rushing yards and points scored, respectively.
Indianapolis' defense could use an addition, though. Granted, the Colts rank ninth in points allowed, but their pass defense ranks 29th and could use more help, especially at cornerback.
Thankfully, it looks like Ballard is trying to improve his defense.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports that the Colts are considered a "team to watch" ahead of the deadline and he reports Ballard's focus is on adding a "proven defensive playmaker."
"The Colts, who own the NFL’s best record at 6-1, are viewed around the league as a team to watch ahead of the trade deadline — with their focus on adding a proven defensive playmaker, per sources," Schultz reported on Wednesday.
"Indy has experimented with in-season free agent signings and even players coming out of retirement, but targeting a real difference-maker for DC Lou Anarumo is something to watch," Schultz added.
The Colts are well-positioned to do something significant, as the team is projected to have a grand total of 17 draft picks over the next two years, including eight in 2026. The Colts are also in a good spot financially over the next two seasons, so money isn't really an obstacle, either.
Cornerback is a clear need thanks to the unexpected retirement of Xavien Howard, who was no great shakes anyway. The Athletic's Dianna Russini has reported that Indy is looking to "bolster" that position, so we'd expect a move there.
Edge rusher is another position to keep an eye on. The Colts already have a solid group, but you can never have enough good edge rushers in this day and age and having a stronger pass-rush will help Indy's suspect secondary.
