Report: Everton Explore Deal for Right-Back Available for Free Next Summer

Everton have been linked with Mainz 05 wing-back Anthony Caci.

The Frenchman is out of contract at the Bundesliga club at the end of the season, and is yet to renew.

As per a report in the print edition of today’s SportBild, the Blues were one of a number of interested parties earlier this year.

Indeed, Fulham were also reportedly interested in Caci, as were French outfit Nice.

The player has previously rejected offers of renewed terms with the German side, indicating his desire to seek pastures new.

His availability as a free agent could be tempting for Moyes, with reinforcements desperately needed at right-back.

The 28-year-old also offers versatility, and can play in a defensive right-back position, as well as higher up the pitch.

However, the defender is currently out with a thigh injury and is not expected to be available this calendar year.

CACI WOULD OFFER MOYES VERSATILITY AND AN ATTACKING THREAT

David Moyes has been forced to persevere with centre-back Jake O’Brien at right-back for most of this season.

Seamus Coleman has had spells in the treatment room, while Nathan Patterson remains unavailable.

Alongside our lacklustre forward line, right-back is clearly the weak link in an otherwise developing side.

It was an incredibly productive summer, and it would’ve been a big ask to resolve issues in every position.

However, right-back has been a problem area for many years now, and must be addressed in January.

Caci could be available on a cut price deal with his contract due to expire next summer.

However, the club would likely wait until he was a free agent should they pursue a deal for the Frenchman.

In the short term, perhaps James Garner could take on the right-back position, as he has previously done.

Merlin Rohl could slot into midfield while Jake O’Brien either drops to the bench or moves inside to his natural position.
