The New York Giants are widely believed to be a team that could trade for a wide receiver ahead of next month's deadline.
After all, it makes sense that the Giants would add another player at the position with Malik Nabers being lost for the season. If New York wants to put Jaxson Dart in the best position to succeed, it needs more than Wan'Dale Robinson and Darius Slayton, both of whom are decent No. 2 receivers, at best.
However, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler is pouring some cold water on the idea that the Giants could make a move at wide receiver, especially a significant one.
He reports that league sources are doubtful about the Giants being keen on adding more wide receiver help because of their desire to retain draft picks as the team continues to build up its roster.
"The Giants come to mind here (for a wide receiver trade), Fowler said. "They could use help for Jaxson Dart, but multiple teams I've spoken to believe the Giants would prefer to keep their draft picks as a team still in transition."
Another thing owner John Mara has to weigh is if he wants general manager Joe Schoen selling off future assets when the embattled executive might not be back next season.
The futures of Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll are tied to Dart's success, so one would assume they'd be fine with making a trade to help the young signal-caller out.
That said, the Giants will probably only make a big move if it's for a young wideout who can be a long-term answer, like the New Orleans Saints' Chris Olave or the Miami Dolphins' Jaylen Waddle, for example. However, there is no shortage of doubts about either one being available.
Jakobi Meyers of the Las Vegas Raiders is another top potential option in the trade market given his public desire for a trade, but he's also 29 and in the final year of his contract.
Meyers is still a good wide receiver, though, and it's not crazy to think that the Giants could trade for him and turn around and extend him in order to pair the veteran with Nabers in 2026, which would be a great duo for Dart to work with.
Mara should not be giving Schoen and Daboll carte blanche considering their shaky futures with the team, but if there's a big trade opportunity that makes sense for both 2025 and beyond, we could see Big Blue pulling the trigger.
