Sandro Tonali signed a contract extension with Newcastle United during his suspension, Geordie Boot Boys understand.

The 25-year-old has emerged as Eddie Howe’s most important player over the past 12 months, while he has even blossomed into a leader within the Newcastle United squad.

Following the Alexander Isak situation that started with a contract dispute, there have been calls for Sandro Tonali to get a new deal at St James’ Park. The belief was that his deal ran until 2028, having signed for five years following his 2023 arrival.

However, the £55million midfielder has since signed a secret contract extension.

Sandro Tonali is one of Newcastle United’s highest earners after contract extension

Speaking exclusively to Geordie Boot Boys, transfer expert Graeme Bailey has revealed that Sandro Tonali is now one of the best-paid players at Newcastle United because of this contract extension.

“Newcastle sources have revealed that Tonali has already signed a new deal,” he said.

“The contract puts him close to the club’s highest earner Bruno Guimaraes and I am told he had no doubt about signing.

“He knows he let the club down when he was handed the gambling ban, and when Newcastle offered him fresh terms, he signed quickly.

“Howe was very clever. He pushed the club’s hierarchy to tie down Tonali to a new deal, when they didn’t have to and that looks a very clever move at this point.

“I can confirm that some clubs did touch base about Tonali and his possible availability but it was made clear that he is not going anywhere. It has to be said the player was happy to sign this deal. He is settled in Newcastle, and the football he is playing now is first-class. He really has emerged as a leader within the squad.”

The midfield maestro’s deal now runs until 2029, with the option of an additional 12 months. Therefore, Newcastle United effectively have Tonali tied down until 2030.

Sandro Tonali is already committed to Newcastle, they have him until 2030, if they want after he agreed new terms during his suspension.

Newcastle United can ‘beat anyone’ with Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes

Newcastle United fans are delighted about the Tonali news, and rightly so. After watching the Alexander Isak saga unfold this summer, there has been a renewed spotlight on the Magpies retaining their key players.

Tonali falls into that category, alongside captain Bruno Guimaraes.

Speaking to Geordie Boot Boys, Bailey adds that Eddie Howe views Tonali and Bruno as his two most important players, before noting what a current Newcastle United player has privately said about the midfield duo.

“Eddie Howe sees Tonali and Bruno as the key to this Newcastle side,” he said.

“One Newcastle player told me recently that when Bruno and Tonali walk on that pitch together, the side truly believe they can beat anyone.”

It was recently reported that Newcastle United want Bruno to sign a new contract too, with the Brazil international’s current deal running until 2028.
