New York Giants backup signal-caller Russell Wilson wasn’t impressed by a vague jab from his former coach with the Denver Broncos, Sean Payton.
The veteran quarterback called Payton “classless” on social media on Tuesday.
During a press conference after the Broncos’ 33-32 win over the Giants on Sunday, Payton said he was hoping to face Wilson instead of New York rookie Jaxson Dart. The first-year passer compiled four touchdowns — three by passes — though he couldn’t overcome a furious fourth-quarter comeback from the Broncos.
“They found a little spark with that quarterback,” Payton said. “I was talking to [Giants owner] John Mara not too long ago, and I said we were hoping that change would’ve happened long after our game.”
The comment reached Wilson, who responded on X.
“Classless … but not surprised. … Didn’t realize you’re still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media,” the veteran wrote, referring to the Bountygate scandal that saw Payton suspended for the 2012 season.
The Broncos went 11-19 in two seasons with Wilson under center, failing to make the playoffs. The team released him after the 2023 season, taking an $85 million cap hit.
