Despite ESPN's Shams Charania initially reporting that Karl-Anthony Towns is doubtful for the New York Knicks' season opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers, the All-Star center is going to play tonight.
"Despite being downgraded to doubtful, I’m hearing Karl-Anthony Towns will indeed play for the Knicks in tonight’s season opener," reported the New York Post's Stefan Bondy.
While the Knicks will be without Josh Hart and Mitchell Robinson, they will have Towns in the mix for Opening Night.
Karl-Anthony Towns planning on playing tonight
Sharania later updated his reporting, revealing New York seems to be playing ping-pong with Towns' injury designation.
"The Knicks, an hour later, are now listing Karl-Anthony Towns as questionable again. He is essentially a game-time decision."
The news couldn't be better for the banged-up Knicks, who are already going to be shorthanded this evening.
Hart, who injured his back in New York's preseason game against the Philadelphia 76ers, will miss tonight's game.
Robinson is going to be load managing throughout the 2025-26 season, and it questionably begins with tonight's game against the Cavaliers.
Both key players' status is unclear for the Knicks' second game of the season on Friday night when they take on the Boston Celtics.
For now, New York will hope that Towns is healthy enough to give them some good minutes tonight.
Luckily for the Knicks, the Cavaliers are dealing with some injuries as well and will be without starting point guard Darius Garland and wing Max Strus.
Despite both teams missing key contributors, superstars Jalen Brunson and Donovan Mitchell going head-to-head should be enough to make tonight must-watch television.
