Jean-Philippe Mateta is continuing his impressive run of form in the Premier League this season, once more attracting the attention from top teams.

Last season saw the striker net 17 goals and grab four assists in 46 games for Crystal Palace, helping them secure their first-ever major trophy by winning the FA Cup.

Only a matter of months later, Mateta converted another in Palace’s Community Shield win over Liverpool, kickstarting his tally for the year.

Already in only 13 games, the 28-year-old has grabbed seven goals, even earning himself a call-up to the France national team, grabbing his first international goal against Iceland last week.

As such, United have renewed their interest in the star after scouting him leading into the summer, and are leading the race for his services, looking to capitalise on the striker’s desire for a new challenge.

CaughtOffside has reported that talks to renew Mateta’s contract at Selhurst Park have stalled, with a source commenting: “Palace had hoped to tie him down to a new contract, but I think there’s a growing realisation now that the player is unlikely to engage further in talks.”

Interestingly another source commented that a deal could be done for Jean-Philippe Mateta for a surprisingly low fee, commenting: “Mateta is one to watch for sure. A new contract doesn’t look likely, so they may well feel it’s a good time to cash in. Don’t be surprised if £40m gets a deal done.”

With United having paid £74 million for Benjamin Sesko, a £40 million price tag makes Mateta seem like a bargain, given he’s a proven Premier League goalscorer.

However, The Red Devils have Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur to compete against if they want to bring the France international to Old Trafford.
