Mateta told L'Equipe that Zaha and other members of the side had previously laughed when he said he wanted to play for France.

The forward then used their reaction as motivation during his journey to the national team.

He made his long-awaited debut earlier this month as a substitute against Azerbaijan.

Mateta then scored his first goal for Les Bleus three days later during a draw with Iceland.

Following those appearances, he told the French newspaper: "At Crystal Palace, right at the start, when I wasn't even playing, I spoke about the France team in the dressing room and I had teammates like Wilfried Zaha who were laughing.

"They said that I was mad to think about the France team when I wasn't even playing at Crystal Palace, but I responded saying that it was my objective and that I simply had to play to show what I could do."

Those comments prompted a furious response from Zaha on social media.

The former Palace winger denied the claims, which he called 'disgusting'.

However, Mateta has now revealed that the pair have since spoken in private to resolve their dispute.

Speaking ahead of the Eagles' Conference League clash with AEK Larnaca, he explained: "I spoke with him.

"Everything is good. We talked in private, and that's it."

Mateta and Zaha made 39 appearances together for Palace between 2021 and 2023.

The former has scored seven goals for the club already this season across all competitions, continuing his form from last term.

Mateta on France pride

Having helped Oliver Glasner's side win both the FA Cup and Community Shield in 2025, Mateta is now a full France international at 28 years old.

Asked about representing his country, he told reporters: "I am very proud obviously and happy, and I think I deserve it because I train very hard. It's a dream come true and I hope I will get called up again.

"I am a very ambitious guy, and when I take up something, I try to do everything to make it come true."
