NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says league is looking into AI to potentially help officials

The NFL has quickly morphed into the most popular sport in the United States. Sundays from September until February are filled with the pigskin. However, the love of the game does not hide the issues in the game.

It happens in every league, but officiating seems to always be the conversation of every Monday morning quarterback. For instance, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fanbase was enraged by a Detroit Lions challenge on Monday Night Football that led to the team losing a first down.

But what made the decision to take the Buccaneers’ first down away enrage the fans was that it wasn’t the reason the Lions made the challenge in the first place.

Officiating is never going to be perfect as long as humans are making the calls; we’re not perfect. However, what if we try to ruin the league with AI?

On Wednesday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell spoke about the potential of the league using AI in the future to help with officiating.

Roger Goodell told reporters that the NFL is looking into how AI might be able to help out officiating in the future.

I’m not entirely against AI, but the issues with the NFL should already be fixed. We have every camera angle known to man, and communication tools to get a call from New York at any moment.

Gone are the days of the officials releasing an apology to a team that lost because of a bad call. We already have the technology to rectify those issues. However, I want to run down a deeper rabbit hole.

What if the league wants the controversy? Being a professional wrestling fan, former WCW executive producer Eric Bischoff even wrote a book called ‘Controversy Creates Cash.’

They may never come out and say it, but the league staying in the spotlight over bad calls while they continue to rake in bags of money can’t really be as bad as it sounds, right?
