Mohamed Salah will remain on Liverpool's bench if he doesn't make this major change

Mohamed Salah's selfish tendencies could see him set for a sustained period on the bench.

The Liverpool forward has been slammed by talkSPORT's Troy Deeney and Adrian Durham for not putting the team first against Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday night.

Arne Slot's side at one stage were heading for a fifth straight defeat in all competitions after Rasmus Kristensen put the hosts ahead in the 26th minute.

But the Reds, who lost Alexander Isak at half time to injury, fought back to record a stunning 5-1 win in Germany with Hugo Ekitike, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai all on target.

In truth, it should have been more, with £116.5million summer signing Florian Wirtz unlucky not to open his account for the Merseyside outfit.

The former Bayer Leverkusen playmaker had his most productive match for Liverpool - chipping in with two assists in the second half.

His first - which ended a run of 11 games without an assist - came in the 66th minute when he unselfishly squared the ball for Gakpo to tap home.

He then teed up Szoboszlai shortly later, with the Hungarian rifling in a low driven attempt into the bottom left corner.

But unfortunately for the 22-year-old, he was ignored when unmarked in the box when Salah was put through on goal.

Salah, who was dropped for the second Champions League match in a row, was introduced at Deutsche Bank Park in the 74th minute.

And he should have left with an assist had he decided to square to Wirtz - waiting six yards from goal - but he instead decided to try and shoot through Michael Zetterer's legs from a tight angle.

The German goalkeeper comfortably saved the shot, with Salah's decision leaving Wirtz furious as he threw his arms up in the air in disbelief.

Speaking live on talkSPORT commentary, ex-Watford captain Deeney urged Salah to be more selfless, as he said: "He's tried to go through the legs there.

"He's got to square it, I'm sorry Mo Salah, you've got to square that there.

"That's just his mentality of getting goals and you can't take that out of him, because it's obviously a great thing.

"But just square it, that's get your teammate off to the races."

He added: "All he has to do is square it, exactly the same as what Wirtz did for Gakpo, he squares it and Wirtz is off to the races.

"That would be a goal and an assist and all that price tag is off his shoulders.

"But again, I love what most Salah represents in terms of the goals and assists that he gets it in life, but he's always always about him, he wants to score first.

"I think in that situation, just be a good teammate and set somebody else up."

Speaking post-match, legendary broadcaster Durham then had his say on Salah, declaring that he could remain out of Slot's starting XI unless he starts being less selfish.

He said: "That chance at the end when Mo Salah goes for goal - Florian Wirtz is fuming in the middle.

"You [Deeney] said in commentary, he has to square it, that's the kind of thing that will keep Mo Salah on the bench."

He then stated: "I actually feel quite angry about the chance to square it from Salah to Wirtz. How will Wirtz feel about that? Because he was fuming at the time."

Durham's comments on the Egyptian icon led Deeney to state that Salah will always put himself first if he gets a sniff at goal - a trait he will not be changing.

Deeney said: "That's what Mo Salah is, he scores first, then he assists everybody else.

"We see so many times, he's assisted, he's got these great stats and these great numbers.

"But for me, the teammate is the one that goes, 'Right, Wirtz has got all this pressure because of the price tag,' et cetera...

"Just square it to him and let it be, the reason that people say Florian Wirtz is such a good player, not only because he's technical, but when you see the Gakpo goal, he just knows that's the right thing [to pass].

"He makes the right play so many times and I just think for that one Salah just showed who he is, which is someone that wants to score first.

"And when it comes off, it's great, but when he doesn't, he just looks selfish."

Both Wirtz and Salah will be looking to get on the score sheet in Liverpool's next outing on Saturday night away at Brentford - live on talkSPORT.

Already four points behind leaders Arsenal after eight matches, Liverpool know they cannot afford to drop any more points.
