Lennart Karl named Player of the Match in dream Champions League debut with Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich dispatched Club Brugge 4-0 with a massive win at home thanks to goals from Lennart Karl, Harry Kane, Luis Díaz, and Nicolas Jackson. Vincent Kompany surprised everyone by including the 17-year-old Karl, but the gamble paid off as Karl opened the scoring thanks to a goal that Arjen Robben (who was watching live in the stadium) would be proud of. For his efforts, he was awarded the Player of the Match award by UEFA:

“He is 17 years old and had a lot of involvement. He scored the first goal, a fantastic goal when everything was tight. Changed the game lots of times. Good pressing and movement, without losing the ball”

The goal that Karl scored was similar to the one that Serge Gnabry scored against Olympique Lyonnais five years ago, cutting inside whilst running across the edge of the box followed by a left-footed finish. Kane’s goal was a well-timed run to tap it into an open net, while Díaz scored with a high shot inside the penalty area; both goals were supplied by Konrad Laimer. Jackson’s goal came from a rebound, where he scored from a tight angle.

Bayern extends its winning streak to 12 games, and their next opponent is a surprisingly rock-bottom Gladbach in the Bundesliga on the weekend.

Bayern Munich hosted Club Brugge in the Champions League and while the Belgian side was game, the Bavarians were just better. A lot better.
