Young stars rise in Texas on Wednesday night as Victor Wembanyama leads his San Antonio Spurs into an opening-night matchup against No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg and the Dallas Mavericks.

San Antonio took a step forward last season, winning 34 games after back-to-back 60-loss seasons despite losing Wembanyama for most of the second half of the season. The Spurs added second-overall pick Dylan Harper to that mix as well as No. 14 pick Carter Bryant. Flagg was the big prize for the Mavericks after the shocking trade of Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers in February, which involved Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a package of draft picks. Dallas added D'Angelo Russell to hold down the point guard spot while Kyrie Irving recovers from a torn ACL and boasts a deep frontcourt rotation led by Davis that includes Flagg, P.J. Washington, Daniel Gafford, Dereck Lively II, and veteran Dwight Powell. The Mavs, despite a 13-20 record after the Dončić deal, reached the play-in tournament, eliminating the Sacramento Kings before losing the eighth seed to the Memphis Grizzlies.
The Spurs haven't reached the playoffs since their record-matching string of 22 straight appearances reached its conclusion in 2019. Dallas is just one season removed from an NBA Finals appearance in 2024.
