Newcastle United remain in high spirits after their dazzling victory over Benfica. It was a perfect Champions League night at St James’ Park as Eddie Howe’s side enjoyed a 3-0 victory on Tuesday.
Anthony Gordon opened the scoring for Newcastle as he met Jacob Murphy’s pass at the back post. The England international has now scored four goals in three Champions League games this season and his performance caught the attention of Benfica boss Jose Mourinho.
Harvey Barnes completed the scoreline in the second-half with an impressive brace off the bench. Meanwhile, Newcastle earned the victory without key midfielder Sandro Tonali, who was an unused substitute.
It has since emerged that the Italian midfielder previously extended his contract at the club during his lengthy ban for betting offences. Tonali has become one of Newcastle’s most important players and reportedly sees his long-term future at the club, unlike former teammate Alexander Isak.
The victory over Benfica should prove to be ideal preparation for the club’s upcoming game against Fulham on Saturday. Here’s a closer look at some of the latest headlines surrounding Newcastle.

Sandro Tonali stance on copying Alexander Isak
Tonali initially signed a five-year deal until 2028 upon completing his move from AC Milan. However, it has been revealed that the club agreed to extend his contract following his suspension in October 2023, with his contract now running until 2029 with the option of a further year.
New sporting director Ross Wilson is still scheduled to hold talks with Tonali’s representatives over improved terms. The midfielder’s performances would still make him a target for several clubs, having shone for Newcastle since last season.
However, the Daily Mail reports that there is no indication that Tonali will follow in Alexander Isak’s footsteps to force a move away if a new deal is not agreed. The saga surrounding Isak’s move to Liverpool was somewhat fuelled by Wilson’s predecessor Paul Mitchell not meeting the striker’s demands.

It is claimed that Tonali would also not consider a return to Italy at this stage of his career. The Italy international is said to appreciate how much his game has improved since working under Howe.
Jose Mourinho in Anthony Gordon’s ear
Anthony Gordon is not only impressing Newcastle fans but also opposition managers. The 24-year-old has relished the Champions League spotlight this season, scoring against Barcelona and grabbing a brace against Union SG before opening the scoring on Tuesday.
Gordon also provided the assist for Barnes’ second goal to cap off a successful night before making way for Anthony Elanga late on. After the final whistle, he was approached by Benfica boss Mourinho, who had some kind words for the Newcastle forward.

"He said 'You are too much' which is a big compliment for me because as a kid he was my favourite manager in the world growing up,” Gordon said after the match.
"It's quite weird because he was quite a defensive manager, but I just love the way even then, the bench was getting up. He really creates a team environment, it's like us against the world.
"I recognise that from my own game so it was a big compliment. It means an awful lot. Even if I didn't idolise him, a compliment from any coach at this level means a lot."
