BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Tickets to the hottest events in town Wednesday night were sold out! The NBA YoungBoy concert and the annual Green Carpet Affair — celebrating Magic City Classic Week.
The BJCC has made security adjustments to prepare for the crowds. Both of the events drew in thousands of people. With everything going on, safety and traffic concerns are top of everyone’s minds.
NBA YoungBoy fans packed into Legacy Arena Wednesday night for the latest stop on his sold-out tour. Concertgoers had to follow strict rules to get in.
“I think the whole no bandana thing, no purse — I think it’s crazy,” someone at the concert said.
No bags of any kind, no chains, and no bandanas.
BJCC increased security after incidents at other NBA YoungBoy concerts in Kansas City and New Orleans.
But they also needed to prepare for those at the annual Green Carpet Affair happening at the Birmingham Museum of Art, just down the street from the arena.
“It’s Classic Week, and everybody’s out having a good time, and hopefully we have a great time and everything is safe,” said Theresa Barron, attending the Green Carpet Affair.
The Green Carpet Affair is the highly anticipated event hosted by Mayor Randall Woodfin to mark the start of events leading up to Magic City Classic.
“I have been trying for years to get tickets to this event,” Barron said.
Guests wear semi-formal or cocktail attire and take the night to celebrate community.
With both events happening downtown, traffic was a concern getting home, but the city said they’re prepared.
“We don’t expect any issues with traffic, but we do have a plan in place to push everything out of the footprint as they’re leaving, so we should be good to go,” said Birmingham Chief of Police Michael Pickett.
Chief Pickett says they are enforcing a youth curfew for people not inside the concert that began at 9 p.m. They asked parents to make sure kids are picked up by 11:30 p.m. if they’re at the concert.
There were around 30 people outside the concert who were told they are not allowed in, even though they say they bought tickets. It’s unclear why they were not allowed in.
