The former Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa boss did not hold back with criticism of West Ham transfer dealings.

Former Tottenham Hotspur star Tim Sherwood has slammed West Ham transfer dealings in recent window and believes that the current squad available to Nuno Espirito Santo is worse than some Championship sides.

The Hammers are facing a real relegation fight this season with the newly promoted sides all picking up points since the start of the campaign. The London outfit sits 19th in the table after eight matches with just one league win.

Graham Potter was sacked by the club last month with Nuno Espirito Santo brought in, but the new manager has his work cut out to turn the tide. The 51-year-old is clearly not happy with the squad currently available to him.

The Hammers snapped up Callum Wilson as a free agent this summer to fill the void left by Michail Antonio but Nuno has left him as an unused sub in the last three outings, despite his team struggling for goals. The West Ham boss also made a triple substitution against Brentford at half time after being visibly frustrated by defensive errors made by his side.

Speaking on Sky Sports on Wednesday, Sherwood went on a seven-minute tirade venting his frustrations at what is going on at West Ham. The ex Spurs and Blackburn Rovers midfielder never played for West Ham but sympathised with supporters.

He said: “Ultimately, what have they got at West Ham at the moment? What is the identity? Are they a team who are going to have to play direct? Are they strong, big, good from set pieces? They are none of this by the way? Have they got the maverick? Yeah, they got Paqueta. I know they don’t want to get rid of him but is he good enough for the side on his own?

“Jarrod Bowen is their only bright spark. If you asked the West Ham fans now, who would you want to keep at the club? It would be Jarrod. I’m not sure they are bothered about any other player in the squad. They’ve got players sitting on the bench who are better than what’s on the pitch. How can Wan-Bissaka not get on? They threw a kid in there... there’s nothing wrong with Scarles but give him a chance. It’s the wrong environment, there’s an art to dropping him in and out.

Sherwood blasts ‘Championship level’ West Ham

“Potts, where’s he? They are signing these bang average players who are blocking up the pathway for the young kids. Why sign bang average players? It’s West Ham, you can attract some of the best players. There are a lot of players around Europe, and there are players in the Championship better than the players they have now. Just get your foot soldiers to look and identify players the fans want to see and the manager can work with. At the moment, it’s a total mess at that football club.”

The January transfer window is a notoriously tricky market to get deals across the line with clubs aware of one another’s plights and able to drive a hard bargain. West Ham did invest significant money this summer too with fees splashed on Mateus Fernandes, Jean-Clair Todibo, El Hadji Malick Diouf, Mads Hermansen and Soungoutou Magassa.

There are some rumours that West Ham could save a transfer fee and add goals in a loan move for former Brentford man Ivan Toney, who is keen for a brief return to the Premier League from Saudi Arabia - you can read more on those reports here.
