Report: Bayern Munich gave Vincent Kompany early extension to ward off Manchester City

According to a report from Tz journalists Philipp Kessler, Mano Bonke, and Hanna Raif (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich was hasty and proactive in its contract extension with head coach Vincent Kompany because it feared Manchester City would be lurking in 2027 to lure its former player back to England:

With the quick contract extension, Bayern bosses wanted to anticipate any potential interest from Manchester City in Vincent Kompany. There were concerns that City might turn their attention to their former captain and lure him back to the club as Pep Guardiola’s successor when both their contracts end in 2027, that’s why Bayern made Kompany’s renewal an ‘urgent matter.’

Bayern Munich was prudent to take this approach as Kompany — no doubt — would have been a key target to take over for Pep Guardiola if the Spaniard walks away from the job in 2027.

Now, though, Kompany is wrapped up until 2029 and if Manchester City — or someone else — wants the Belgian, they will have to play a hefty premium.

Bayern Munich has a busy week ahead and much like the team’s activity, there are a ton of news items and talking points to discuss following the team’s big 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund.

Let get into the big topics for the show. This is what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show:
