Enzo Maresca lauds Estevao Willian's performance against Ajax

Estevao Willian put in another impressive performance, this time against Ajax in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Not only did the Brazilian score one of Chelsea’s goals in the first half of the game, but he also looked like a constant threat throughout the game.

Though Jamie Gittens may have taken home the player of the match award, it was Estevao Willian’s performance that impressed Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca the most, and it's easy to see why.

The teenager had the game at his feet, posing by far the greatest threat to the Ajax goal.

On Wednesday night, Estevao Willian had eight shots and 14 touches in the opposing penalty area were game-highs, and he was unlucky not to get another goal after calmly dispatching Chelsea’s second penalty.

Speaking to the media after the game, Maresca revealed what sets Estevao Willian apart from other young players.

Enzo Maresca praises Estevao Willian and makes Cole Palmer comparison

After the game, Football London quoted Maresca as saying, “With young players, most of the time you are a bit worried because most of the time, they play one or two games and score, and they think they are already top players.

“But we don’t need to worry about that with Estevao. He’s very humble and polite, and he has family close to him.”

Estevao and Malo Gusto

Estevao Willian is developing into Chelsea’s talisman in the absence of Cole Palmer, and Maresca had a comparison to make between the two players.

The Italian manager said, “I feel very lucky to be his manager. He’s exciting, we can enjoy. The fans pay the tickets to see players like Cole and Estevao – these types of players. It’s nice to have these types of players.”

While it is great to see the youngster step up in the absence of Palmer, he should not let such comments go to his head.
