FOXBOROUGH - Drake Maye didn’t spend too much time in the blue tent during Sunday’s win over the Tennessee Titans.
But it was long enough for him to know he has to slide and “know when to get down,” after his head hit the turf while being tackled, forcing him to be taken out of the game with a suspected concussion.
It was also long enough for him to know something good took place on the field in his absence.
Josh Dobbs came on in relief of Maye to lead three plays.
His first was a handoff to Rhamondre Stevenson. Then, facing a 3rd-and 5 from the Tennessee 30, Dobbs eluded the rush, and throwing across his body, hit DeMario Douglas, with the receiver making a one-handed grab to keep the chains moving.
Maye returned following another Dobbs handoff, and finished off the 12-play scoring drive to cap off the 31-13 win.
“Credit to Dobbs. He made the play of the day. He came in, evaded a sack, and threw a dime,” Maye said Wednesday of the veteran backup. “It was good to see that. From the blue tent, I was looking through the top of the blue tent and saw it.
“I heard a reaction, a cheer ... what a catch. I saw it on the Jumbotron after. That was a sweet play.”
Douglas made a similar play in practice Wednesday, which reminded Maye of the moment.
As for not sliding, Maye is well aware he needs to be smarter.
“I’m competitive and I want to make the most out of every play,” Maye said. “But also, you gotta be smart.”
