Man City have already played three games in the Champions League this season.

They come off consecutive 2-0 wins, one in the Premier League against Everton, and the other in the Champions League against Villarreal. It leaves City having won two of three games in the European competition so far this season, with their other result being a draw against Monaco at the start of the month.

City is one of just two teams on seven points after three Champions League games, with Borussia Dortmund being the other. Real Madrid, Arsenal, Inter, Bayern and PSG are ahead of them, with all five having won all three of their opening games in the competition.

How much money have Man City made from the Champions League?

Qualifying for the Champions League is a massive deal for any club due to the amount of money that teams can win even just by being in the competition. But clubs also get bonuses based on performance including wins and draws.

Man City won two of their three games so far, against Napoli and Villarreal, and have drawn once, against Monaco, so will get a solid chunk of cash in bonuses just three games into the league phase.

For simply being in the league phase of the Champions League, every club receives £16.2m in a base fee for taking part. Furthermore, a draw earns an extra £608,000, and a win earns an extra £1.8m. This means that City’s draw and two wins have already earned them £4.2m in results bonuses, taking their overall total to £20.4m after just three games.

Bear in mind that regardless of whether they qualify for the knockout stages, City still have five more league phase games to play, so plenty more opportunities to add to their stash. It really shows how valuable it is to be in the Champions League, and how much of an opportunity missed it is for those who failed to qualify.

That point is a sore one for rivals Manchester United. Ruben Amorim’s side reached the Europa League final last season but lost 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur. The London club have pocketed just shy of £20m from their participation with one win and two draws from their games. A figure that could have been going to the Red Devils if they won back in May.

What is the maximum amount Man City could make?

Based on their start to the season, it would be fair to assume that City will likely get through to the knockout stages of the Champions League. If they do that, the rewards could be major for the club’s budget.

In terms of the most they could earn, reaching the knockout phase earns a team £868,635, which is on top of over £20m that City have already accumulated. Getting to the Round of 16 will earn a team £9.5m, the Quarter-finals £10.8m, the Semi-finals £13m, and the Final £16m.

The Champions League winner will earn an extra £21.7m, meaning that all added up, just by winning without considering league phase bonuses, City could make over £72m, which is more than enough to bring in a world-class player in the summer transfer window. Consider the league phase bonuses, and you can see, it really pays to qualify for the competition.
