Patrick Mahomes and Chiefs teammate Travis Kelce opened 1587 Prime — their new steakhouse — in mid-September, and there’s no doubt it has quickly become the hottest reservations in Kansas City.
On Wednesday, during an exclusive interview session with local writers, Mahomes shared what he’s learned from the experience so far.
“I think it’s just a cool place we can call our own — and hopefully Kansas City can call their own,” the quarterback said. “I went there a couple weeks ago, and I was in the private room, and I’m sitting there, and they were like, ‘Hey, Chris Oladokun’s outside, and Chris Jones is outside, and George Karlaftis was there the other day.’”
Oladokun is a reserve quarterback, Jones and Karlaftis two of the defense’s biggest stars.
At its core, the restaurant is already being praised as one of Kansas City’s top steakhouses. But in spirit, it connects diners with Mahomes, Kelce and the essence of Chiefs fandom through drinks like The Showtime (a nod to Mahomes), The Big Yeti (Kelce’s nickname) and The Alchemy (an ode to Taylor Swift).
If guests aren’t in the mood for a pricier wagyu or seafood, they can opt for the cheaper Big Red, a smash burger named after their head coach.
“Guys are going there and making it our thing,” Mahomes said. “It’s a place that we can go to, and it’s been cool to see (the fans). You go in there, and (see) all the Chiefs fans and how they’re supporting us.”
With the Chiefs at 4-3 and in-season, most of Mahomes’ attention revolves around game-planning for the next opponent. Still, life as a restaurant owner bleeds into his day, at least a little.
“You get a lot of late texts like, ‘Can I get in?’”
That happened with Kansas City defensive tackle Charles Omenihu.
“Eight o’clock one night, he’s like, ‘Hey, can I get in?’” Mahomes said. “I’m like, ‘I’ll text somebody. Just got to see if we can get you in.’
“We got him in, and he enjoyed it.”
Recently, Mahomes realized his family and friends already had favorite dishes he had yet to try. So what does a restaurant owner do in that scenario?
Naturally, make a date out of it with your wife of two and a half years.
“I went with (wife) Brittany,” Mahomes said. “We were ordering every appetizer — we didn’t even order entrees — just every little thing, side or whatever it was that everybody had talked to us about.
“It is cool that we have so many options. I love steak, but I don’t want steak every single time I go eat. It’s done well — it’s been sold out the whole time because Kansas City’s supported.”
Right now, Mahomes said he stops in the restaurant once about every two weeks. To keep it fresh, he believes that’s the sweet spot.
“It’s amazing, but you can only eat at the same place so many times,” he said. “It really is cool because you hear about legends having their own restaurants, but to have one with Trav in a place that I love, that I’ll be at for the rest of my life, is cool.”
