Wolves 1 Burnley 0 16 th September 2018
Wolves kicked off knowing they needed a win, and their season started with a flyer. They controlled the game from the whistle, created chances, and at times showed the composed, expansive football that makes them a team to watch.
Their opponents, Burnley, started poorly. Their shots drifted wide without testing goalkeeper Rui Patricio, who had little to do.
Wolves could have scored through Helder Costa and Diogo Jota, but Joe Hart saved well, adding to a string of earlier Wolves chances.
In midfield, Joao Moutinho and Ruben Neves ran the show with classy play, precise passing, and good tempo. Matt Doherty caused constant problems on the right flank, adding another headache for Burnley.
Half Time: Wolves 0 Burnley 0
The second half began in the same pattern, with Wolves bossing the game and limiting Burnley’s chances.
Wolves took the lead just after the hour. Man of the moment Matt Doherty raced clear past Charlie Taylor toward the box, then squared for Raul Jimenez, who finished to give the home fans something to cheer in a game Wolves had dominated from the start.
Burnley had chances from substitutes Chris Wood and Matej Vydra, but their efforts did not trouble Patricio.
As full time neared, Patricio remained largely untested. Burnley’s shots were off target, and Wolves held on for three points, their first win of the season. They climbed into the top half, kept their unbeaten run to four games, and racked up 30 shots.

HEAD TO HEAD STATS
Wolves 3 Burnley 0 17 th August 2002
Wolves kicked off and scored from their first attack. Cameron picked up the ball outside the box and shot. Burnley goalkeeper Michopoulos pushed it out, but Blake reacted quickest, smashing the loose ball high into the net to give Wolves the lead.
Things got difficult for the away side when they went down to 10 men. Former Wolves player Cook made a reckless tackle on Rae, then argued with the referee and was shown a red card. Burnley were up against it inside the first 10 minutes.
Wolves continued to dominate after the sending off, enjoying plenty of possession and chances to double the lead.
Just before half time, Wolves were awarded a penalty for a handball by West, who blocked a goal-bound effort by Miller. Miller wanted the penalty, but Michopoulos had other ideas, producing a brilliant save low to his left to keep Burnley in it.
Half Time: Wolves 1 Burnley 0
Wolves started the second half where they left off, playing with good pace and tempo. They won a free kick when Ince was fouled by Davis in a dangerous area. Irwin stepped up and curled it into the top corner to make it 2-0, a goal that looked to make the game safe.
Wolves kept pressing. Ince, at the heart of midfield, made the difference after coming on early in the first half when Cameron went off injured following a series of heavy challenges.
Burnley had a few spells of pressure, but the Wolves goalkeeper stood firm and was determined to keep his clean sheet.
Late on, Wolves added a third. Sturridge slipped a good pass to Cooper, who evaded two defenders and chipped the ball in with a neat finish to make it comfortable for the home side and secure the three points.
