More facts and figures ahead of the trip to the Hanseatic City
--------------------------------------------------------------
* The negative goal difference of 74-101 is explained by the early meetings in the 1950s, which came in the old North German Cup and Oberliga North. Ten of these 11 encounters went the way of serial champions at the time Hamburg, some by a large margin.
* Which makes the result of the very first competitive meeting between the two clubs an even greater shock. As newcomers in the top-flight Oberliga Nord, VfL tripped up a Hamburg side featuring German internationals Uwe Seeler and Jupp Posipal on 31 October 1954 and pulled off a stunning 1-0 victory at the Stadion am Elsterweg. Goalscorer Manfred Müller was known as “HSV Müller” from then on.
* HSV have a negative home record against the Green-and-Whites, with six wins, eight draws and seven losses.
* Hamburg, Werder Bremen, St. Pauli – VfL’s northern rivals may be above them in the current table, but the Wolves are the only club from the north of Germany who have been in the Bundesliga without interruption since 1997.
* Along with Mainz and Werder, HSV are the only side yet to score a headed goal this season.
* In 42 Bundesliga clashes between the two teams, 15 players have been sent off – eight of them for the Wolves.
