Jets trade deadline rumor from SNY is bad news for New York's rebuild

If you were expecting the New York Jets to have a fire sale at the NFL trade deadline this year, don't hold your breath.

The Jets are easily the worst team in the NFL right now at 0-7 and are on the cusp of benching their big free-agent acquisition from the offseason, Justin Fields, who has been awful under center. Things couldn't be more disastrous in New York.

New York has an Everest-sized mountain to climb when it comes to a rebuild and that should lead to general manager Darren Mougey selling off anything that isn't nailed down, assuming the prices are right.

However, according to SNY's Connor Hughes, don't expect a fire sale.

Hughes reports that the Jets aren't going to do that, although that doesn't mean they won't make any trades.

"Important to note on Jets as the trade deadline approaches: This is not a fire sale," Hughes wrote. "They have players who are available, as is usually case when new regime takes over. Any deal would be for fair [compensation]/Jets price, though. Not pennies on dollar.

"Teams call/continue to call on guys like Breece Hall, Jermaine Johnson, Will McDonald, Michael Carter, Quinnen (and) Quincy Williams, but that’s the vibe they’re getting from conversations.

"Some league sources wonder if there will be more willingness from Jets to give in negotiations if they fall to 0-8 with a loss to the Bengals. That’s to be seen," he concluded.

Not sure what the difference is between 0-8 and 1-7, but I digress...

At the very least, the Jets should be making two or three trades to help stockpile picks. Anything short of that will hurt their rebuild.

Not exactly a fire sale, but it's a nice realistic middle ground for the Jets to hit.

Anyone and everyone in a contract year should be made available, as those same players are likely to flock elsewhere in 2026 to get away from this mess.

The most notable names from that group include running back Breece Hall, who should be trade candidate No. 1, wide receiver Allen Lazard (hello Steelers), linebacker Quincy Williams, guard John Simpson and safety Andre Cisco.

As for Quinnen Williams, Will McDonald and Jermaine Johnson, we think they're less likely to be dealt, as all three are under contract through at least 2026 and are young enough to be part of New York's long-term plans.

But if teams come with massive trade offers to try and pry any of them away, it's not crazy to think the Jets could part with them. We'd suspect McDonald and Johnson are more likely to be moved than Williams, though.
