How Albion have won at Old Trafford

But, even before going on that run, they had caused their hosts problems at the Theatre of Dreams.

They dominated much of the game in 2021-22 and should have been ahead at half-time.

They were still pressing for an equaliser right until United hit them on a counter right at the end, and that with ten men after a VAR red card following the rather pitiful sight of Cristiano Ronaldo pleading for Lewis Dunk to be sent off.

They were very bright in the first half back in the debut Prem season of 2017-18 before losing to a huge deflection.

And they led through Danny Welbeck in 2020-21.

But a first win at Old Trafford, including the First Division years between 1979 and 1983, was a while coming.

The first day of the season and Erik ten Hag had just taken charge at Old Trafford.

It was Albion’s first game after a summer which had seen them sell Marc Cucurella and Yves Bissouma.

Graham Potter’s answer was to play a back three with Leandro Trossard and Solly March in wing-back roles.

Pascal Gross scored twice in the first half and the introduction at the break of Ronaldo did not spark the hosts much.

United were given a lifeline when the ball went in off Alexis Mac Allister.

But Potter then got it spot on as he made changes, sending on Tariq Lamptey and Enock Mwpeu, and, rather than hanging on, Albion were the better team in the last 15 minutes.

The start of Roberto De Zerbi's big team changes as he made six variations to his XI.

This was seen as the coach putting Europe before the Premier League.

His side were due to launch their Europa League campaign five days later against AEK.

But Lamptey, brought in at left-back, was excellent and Danny Welbeck opened the scoring before Gross and Joao Pedro sent their side into a three-goal lead.

Just like the previous season, Albion ended strongly after United had pulled a goal back.

Andre Onana made four fine saves late on, one of them to deny Ansu Fati a goal on his debut.

Getting in behind the defence at pace helped Albion go ahead last season as Kaoru Mitoma teed up Yankuba Minteh.

United replied from a penalty before Mitoma and Georginio Rutter, helped by Onana’s blunder, secured the away win.

This time it was Fabian Hurzeler’s turn to celebrate in front of the away corner.

His selection included three changes at the end of a busy week which had also seen the Seagulls visit Norwich and Ipswich.

Dunk, Welbeck and Minteh returned to the XI.
