76ers rookie Vj Edgecombe shocks NBA with impressive debut win against Celtics

Most NBA teams have only played one game so far to launch the 2025/26 season, but after looking at many of the rookies that are making their league debuts the Philadelphia 76ers certainly have to be the most impressed with their top-5 star based on his standout performance Wednesday night.

The Sixers not only managed to take down the Boston Celtics in Game 1 of the NBA season, but rookie talent VJ Edgecombe put together a historic night for Philadelphia after dropping 34 points against one of the Eastern Conference’s top teams.

Edgecombe’s performance was so good that it actually the third-highest point total ever by a rookie, and marked just nine points less than Wilt Chamberlain’s 43-point mark that was set over 66 years ago.

Meanwhile, the former Baylor star managed to even top LeBron James’ first-quarter debut record after dropping 14 points early against Boston en route to the victory. The backcourt of Edgecombe and star point guard Tyrese Maxey combined for 74 points on the night, putting the entire NBA on notice with the new partnership.
