Former Everton striker Neal Maupay is enduring a tough time in France with Ligue 1 giants Olympique Marseille.
Since leaving Everton during the summer of 2024, Neal Maupay has taunted Toffees supporters, even admitting that he’s happy when the club lose.
Maupay even predicted them to go down last season, and that proved to be a dreadful take as David Moyes’ side stayed up by 23 points.
Meanwhile, the 29-year-old has been far from convincing at Marseille and now he’s been banished from the squad by manager Roberto De Zerbi.

Neal Maupay’s bizarre situation at Marseille
Maupay hasn’t played a single minute for Marseille this term and has only been named on the substitutes bench once.
According to L’Equipe, the former Toffees striker isn’t even allowed to attend team meetings anymore and is mostly training away from the group.
It’s believed that Maupay often goes into the training ground to just do the warm-ups and then spends the rest of the sessions passing the ball and doing laps with the assistant coach.
MORE EVERTON STORIES
He has just under three years remaining on his contract at Marseille, so it’s turned into a ‘nightmare’ situation.
Maupay will likely be encouraged to leave in the January transfer window, although the Ligue 1 giants will be keen to recoup much of the £6m they spent on his signature.
Everton actually made a profit on Neal Maupay’s sale
Despite shelling out in excess of £10m on Maupay’s signature in 2022, the Toffees still actually ended up making a profit.
Speaking exclusively to Everton News in June, finance expert Adam Williams explained how that was possible, considering he was sold for around £6m.
“It sounds like Maupay signed for a £10m base fee, rising to £15m with add-ons. Let’s call it £12m in total. He signed a three-year deal in 2022 and that has now elapsed. Everton did trigger a one-year extension at some point, but we don’t know exactly when.
“Whatever the case, his amortised book value will be very low – probably about £2.5m. So with a £6m sale rising to £10m, you’re making a £3.5-7.5m profit under PSR. Then, you have the wage savings too.”
So, despite Maupay being a disaster of a signing for more reasons than one, at least the club were able to make some money.
The Maupay saga should be put to bed now, and hopefully there won’t be any more needless digs from the forward.
